More and more Dutch people are becoming infected with rabies (rabies).<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Substantially more reports of possible rabies after contact with animals abroad<\/strong>
The number of Dutch people seeking medical attention during a stay abroad due to possible contact with rabies (rabies) continues to rise. Leiden-based alarm centre Eurocross Assistance reports that more than 500 reports have already been received this year - a 21 per cent increase compared to the same period last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The increase is part of a wider trend. For several years now, Eurocross has seen the number of reports rise. In 2023, it even recorded a 61 per cent increase compared to 2022. That year also saw a sharp increase of 27 per cent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to a Eurocross spokesperson, this development is worrying. \"We see that even in tourist areas travellers can face potentially dangerous situations after contact with animals. This highlights the importance of good information and precautionary measures.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is rabies dangerous?<\/strong>
Yes, rabies is fatal if not treated in time. This should be done immediately after there has been a scratching or biting incident with an animal. Once the first signs of disease are present, treatment is ineffective. This is a major risk for travellers travelling to high-risk areas. Therefore, it is strongly recommended to vaccinate against rabies preventively. After the vaccination series of two doses, you are protected against the disease for life. \u00d3even if bitten or scratched by an infected animal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
