Hepatitis A is a liver infection contracted through contaminated food or water and is especially common in countries with poor sanitation.<\/strong> <strong>In this blog, you will read exactly when a Hepatitis A vaccination is needed, how the vaccination works and for whom it is recommended. So you are well prepared and protected against this nasty disease.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is Hepatitis A?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/vaccinatiepunt.nl\/en\/vaccinations\/hepatitis-a\/\">Hepatitis A<\/a> is an inflammation of the liver caused by the hepatitis A virus (HAV). You contract the virus because the virus gets into your mouth from the faeces of an infected person. This often happens by consuming contaminated food or water. The virus can also be spread through close personal contacts (within a household or sexual activity) or when you travel to areas with poor sanitation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>General malaise and flu-like symptoms<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fever and reduced appetite<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Nausea and abdominal pain<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Jaundice (yellow discolouration of skin and whites of eyes)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dark urine and light-coloured stools<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is about 28 days between infection and becoming ill. In children, hepatitis A often progresses without noticeable symptoms, but they can transmit the virus to adults. Adults usually do experience symptoms. Symptoms may persist for one to two weeks, after which it passes on its own. Recovery can sometimes take months, with fatigue and lethargy persisting.<br><br>A Hepatitis A vaccine provides effective protection against this disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When do you need a Hepatitis A vaccination?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Travel to high-risk areas<\/strong><br>Hepatitis A vaccination is highly recommended if you are travelling to a country where the virus is common. Hepatitis A occurs worldwide, but especially in countries with limited access to safe drinking water and sanitation. Then you are at increased risk of infection. Children can contaminate different surfaces with their hands and transmit the virus by sharing towels and using the same tap.
