Travel vaccinations for Thailand<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Travel vaccinations are an important part of your preparation for a trip to Thailand. Which vaccinations are recommended for you will depend on your itinerary, duration of travel, health and what you will do during your trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To make it clear, we distinguish between vaccinations that are commonly recommended for travellers to Thailand and vaccinations that depend mainly on your personal situation or travel plans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recommended vaccinations for Thailand<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

DTP<\/a>:<\/strong>\u00a0
A DTP vaccination is recommended for Thailand. DTP protects against diphtheria, tetanus and polio. Many people were vaccinated against this as children, but sometimes a repeat is needed. During a travel consultation, we will check whether your DTP vaccination is still valid.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hepatitis A:<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0
Hepatitis A is also recommended for Thailand. Hepatitis A is a contagious liver infection that you can contract through contaminated food or drink. This can happen through food that is not properly prepared, raw produce, contaminated drinking water or ice cubes, for example.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Measles \/ BMR:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a>
In Thailand, there is an increased risk of measles. Therefore, it may be important to check that you are well protected through the BMR vaccination. BMR protects against mumps, measles and rubella. Some people have received this vaccination through the National Vaccination Programme, but not everyone. During a travel consultation, we can check whether a BMR vaccination is necessary for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rabies:<\/a><\/strong>
In Thailand, rabies occurs in domestic and wild mammals, especially dogs. Cats, monkeys and bats can also pose a risk. A rabies vaccination may be discussed when, for example, backpackers, longer trips, travelling with children, many outdoor activities or staying in areas where medical help is less readily available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dengue:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a>
Dengue, also known as dengue fever, is prevalent in Thailand. A dengue vaccination may be discussed for some travellers. This depends on your personal situation and previous infection. Good mosquito protection always remains important.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Optional vaccinations for Thailand <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Japanese encephalitis:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a>
Japanese encephalitis occurs in Thailand. This disease is transmitted by mosquitoes and is especially relevant for longer trips, rural stays, travelling through rural areas or lots of outdoor activities. For a short beach holiday, this vaccination is not always necessary, but this depends on your trip.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yellow fever:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a>
For Thailand, there is no risk of yellow fever. If you are travelling to Thailand directly from the Netherlands, a yellow fever vaccination is not normally required. Are you coming from a country where yellow fever is present, or have you been in transit there for more than 12 hours? Then a yellow fever vaccination certificate may be required.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hepatitis B:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a>
Hepatitis B may be discussed in high-risk travellers. Consider, for example, longer stays, medical work, volunteering, intensive contact with local people or certain personal risks. For stays of 3 months or longer, hepatitis B is recommended in any case.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chikungunya:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a>
There is low or sporadic transmission of chikungunya in Thailand. Vaccination may be discussed for some travellers, depending on the situation. Again, protection against mosquitoes remains important.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mosquitoes, malaria and other risks<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Mosquitoes<\/strong>:<\/strong>\u00a0
<\/a>In Thailand, mosquitoes can transmit diseases such as dengue<\/a>,\u00a0chikungunya<\/a>\u00a0and zika. Some mosquitoes mainly sting during the day, so it is important to protect yourself properly not only at night but also during the day. Use a mosquito repellent with DEET, wear airy covering clothes and preferably sleep in a room with air conditioning, mosquito nets or a mosquito net.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Malaria:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a>
For many popular places in Thailand, malaria risk is low or absent. In cities such as Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai and Pattaya, there is no malaria risk. Also on well-known islands such as Phuket, Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Phi Phi, Koh Lanta, Koh Yao Noi and Koh Yao Yai, good mosquito protection is especially important.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In some areas, such as Little Ko Chang in Ranong province and in parts along the Myanmar border, different malaria advice may indeed apply. Therefore, it is important to share your exact itinerary during your travel advice.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fresh surface water:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a>
In Thailand, there may be a risk of schistosomiasis from contact with fresh surface water. This can come into play, for example, when swimming or paddling in rivers and lakes. There is no vaccination against schistosomiasis, so it is especially important to pay attention to this during your trip. Swimming pools and the sea are not a problem here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Altitude sickness:<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0
When staying above 2,500 metres, altitude sickness can be a topic to discuss. Not everyone has to deal with this in Thailand, but if you are going to higher altitude areas, it is good to include it in your travel advice beforehand.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Practical tips for your trip to Thailand<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Food and drink:<\/strong> 
Thailand is known for its delicious food. Street food is really part of the experience for many travellers. Yet you can get sick via contaminated food or drink. Choose food that has been properly heated, drink water from sealed bottles and be careful with ice cubes, raw produce and food that has been sitting for a long time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Animals:<\/strong>\u00a0
Do not pet unfamiliar animals or feed monkeys, even at temples or tourist spots. In Thailand, rabies occurs in dogs, cats, monkeys and bats, among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Are you bitten, scratched or licked on a wound? Immediately rinse the spot thoroughly with soap and water and seek medical attention as soon as possible. Do this even if you have already been vaccinated against rabies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Scooter riding:<\/strong> 
Many travellers hire a scooter in Thailand. Traffic can be busy and chaotic, and accidents are common. Check carefully that you are insured, always wear a helmet and don't ride if you have no experience. Also note that a Thai \u201cscooter\u201d can often count as a motorbike by Dutch standards. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Travel pharmacy:<\/strong> 
Bring a small travel pharmacy with, for example, paracetamol, ORS, plasters, disinfectant, sunburn, aftersun, mosquito repellent with DEET and any of your own medicines. Do you use medication? Take enough for the whole trip and preferably keep them in your hand luggage. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When should you arrange travel vaccinations?<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Ideally, you should arrange your travel vaccinations about 4 to 6 weeks before departure<\/strong>. Then there is enough time to see which vaccinations are needed and to properly schedule any follow-up vaccinations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Going to Thailand last minute? Even then, it often still makes sense to make an appointment. Some vaccinations can still be given shortly before departure. You will also get practical advice on mosquitoes, malaria, food and drink, animal bites and other health risks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
