Polio vaccination has recently been made compulsory in these countries!

Polio seemed almost eradicated globally in 2013, but in 2014 the virus re-emerged. New infections and international spread of both wild poliovirus and circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus (cVDPV) caused the WHO to declare a continuing Public Health Emergency of International Concern.

Now - since 13 November - international measures have been further tightened. For specific countries, a compulsory polio vaccination for travellers staying longer than 4 weeks applies from that date. This makes the policy more current than ever and highly relevant for travellers.

What is polio again?

Polio (poliomyelitis) is a highly contagious viral disease that mainly affects children, but can occur in anyone. The virus affects the nervous system, which can lead to permanent paralysis and, in severe cases, even respiratory problems or death. Polio spreads through contaminated food, water or direct contact. Although the disease has disappeared in many parts of the world thanks to vaccinations, vigilance remains essential-especially in countries where the virus still circulates.

Which countries does the obligation apply to?

From 13 November, travellers to the countries listed below must be able to prove upon departure that they have received a polio-containing vaccine (DTP) within the past 12 months: Afghanistan, Algeria, Congo D.R. (Kinshasa), Djibouti, Guinea (Conakry), Israel, Cameroon, Pakistan and Chad. This requirement applies to both adults and children. Border authorities can check vaccination compliance upon departure.

What does this mean for you as a traveller?

Are you travelling to one of these countries and staying for more than a month? Then before leaving for the Netherlands or another country, you must be able to prove that you have recently been vaccinated. This avoids delays at border controls and ensures you comply with international rules.

Good to know: For polio, the DTP vaccination, a combination jab that protects you against diphtheria, tetanus and polio in one go.
