In this blog you will read all about the BMR vaccination: what it is, which diseases it prevents, when you need it and how to make an appointment at Vaccinatiepunt. That way, you'll be well prepared whether you stay at home or travel the world.
What is the BMR vaccination?
BMR stands for Mumps, Measles and Rubella. It is a combination vaccine that protects you against three different infectious diseases in one shot. The BMR vaccination is part of the National Vaccination Programme in the Netherlands; most people received this vaccine as children.
Nevertheless, it is important for adults to check whether they are still well protected. Depending on your year of birth and vaccination history, you may need additional protection.
The three diseases explained
Mumps
Mumps (also called parotitis epidemica) is a contagious viral disease that affects the salivary glands near the ear. The virus spreads through the air. A thick, swollen cheek is a common feature.
Mumps occurs worldwide and is particularly risky in environments where people live close together, such as:
- Schools and universities
- Barracks
- Residential groups
Measles
Measles is one of the most contagious diseases in the world. The virus spreads through the air by coughing and sneezing. People who have not been vaccinated or have never had the disease are at greatest risk.
Measles is particularly common in developing countries with lower vaccination coverage. Those who have had the disease are immune for life. Have you been vaccinated but still get measles? Then the disease is usually less severe.
Rubella
Rubella is an infectious disease spread through infected droplets. The disease is particularly dangerous for pregnant women: rubella during pregnancy can cause serious birth defects in the unborn child.
Rubella also occurs worldwide, with higher risks in areas with lower vaccination coverage.
