Dengue vaccination: protection against dengue fever

Planning to travel to tropical destinations? Then it is important to protect yourself against dengue, also known as dengue fever. The dengue vaccination provides effective protection against this mosquito-borne disease that is found in more than 100 countries. Dengue is the fastest-growing mosquito-borne disease in the world. Every year, millions of travellers become infected, with sometimes serious consequences. Fortunately, you can now protect yourself with a vaccination.

What is dengue (dengue fever)?

Dengue, also known as dengue fever in Dutch, is a viral infection transmitted by the Aedes mosquito. These mosquitoes are mostly active during the day, which distinguishes dengue from malaria (where mosquitoes sting at night).

Symptoms of dengue:

  • High fever (up to 40 degrees)
  • Severe headache
  • Pain behind the eyes
  • Joint and muscle pain
  • Skin rash
  • Nausea and vomiting

Most people recover within a week, but some people develop severe dengue (also called dengue haemorrhagic fever). This can lead to bleeding, organ damage and, in rare cases, even death.

Where does dengue occur?

Dengue occurs in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide:

Due to climate change, dengue is also spreading to new areas, including southern Europe.

The dengue vaccination: Qdenga

Since 2023 in the Netherlands, the Qdenga vaccine available. This is the first dengue vaccination that can be widely used for travellers.

How does the dengue vaccination work?

The Qdenga vaccine protects against all four dengue virus types (DENV-1, DENV-2, DENV-3 and DENV-4). The vaccine contains attenuated live viruses that stimulate your immune system to produce antibodies.

Vaccination schedule:

  • Two doses needed for full protection
  • Second dose after 3 months
  • Protection lasts at least 4-5 years
  • Also effective if you have had dengue before

Effectiveness of dengue vaccination

Research shows that dengue vaccination:

  • 80-90% provides protection against symptomatic dengue
  • 90% provides protection against hospitalisation
  • Especially effective against severe dengue

Protection increases after the second dose and lasts for years.

Who is the dengue vaccination suitable for?

The dengue vaccination is suitable for:

Travellers from 4 years to dengue risk areas
Long-term stay (longer than 3 months) in endemic areas
Frequent travellers to tropical destinations
People who have had dengue before (to prevent reinfection)
Expats and digital nomads in high-risk countries

When is dengue vaccination especially important?

The vaccination is strongly recommended in:

  • Travelling during the rainy season (most mosquitoes)
  • Staying in urban areas where dengue is common
  • People at increased risk of severe dengue (elderly travellers, chronic diseases)
  • Second or subsequent trip to dengue area (increased risk of severe form)

Additional measures against dengue

Besides the dengue vaccination, there are additional measures to prevent mosquito bites:

Mosquito protection:

  • Wear long, airy clothes (even during the day!)
  • Use DEET-containing mosquito spray (at least 30%)
  • Sleep under an (impregnated) mosquito net
  • Staying in accommodation with air conditioning or mosquito nets
  • Remove standing water around your accommodation

Dengue mosquitoes sting mainly in the early morning and evening, but can be active throughout the day. Therefore, always combine the vaccination with good mosquito protection.

Frequently asked questions about dengue vaccination

How much does the dengue vaccination cost?
The cost of the dengue vaccination varies between health insurers. Some insurers reimburse travel vaccinations (partially) in the supplementary insurance. Contact Vaccination Point for current prices and information on reimbursements.

How long in advance should I get the dengue vaccination?
For optimal protection, it is recommended to start the vaccination schedule at least 3-4 months before departure. The second dose is given after 3 months. If the schedule is shorter, the first dose can still provide protection.

Can I get the dengue vaccination if I am pregnant?
There is still insufficient research on the safety of dengue vaccination during pregnancy. Always consult your doctor or travel advisor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Is dengue vaccination mandatory for certain destinations?
No, the dengue vaccination is not compulsory anywhere. However, it is strongly recommended when travelling to areas where dengue is common, especially for long-term stays.
