What are meningococci?
Meningococcal are bacteria that can cause meningitis (meningitis). The disease starts with flu-like symptoms but can quickly become severe.
The main symptoms are:

What does the vaccine protect against?
The meningococcal vaccine protects against four groups of bacteria: A, C, W135 and Y. With a single injection you are For 10 years protected. There is also a separate vaccine against meningococcal B. This type is mostly found in western countries and is less relevant for most travel destinations.

How many pricks do you need?
For full protection, you only need a single injection. In adults, the vaccine is administered in the shoulder muscle. In children younger than two years, it is administered in the thigh muscle.
How does the vaccine work?
The vaccine contains parts of the outside of four different types of meningococcal bacteria. After vaccination, your immune system learns to recognise and attack these bacteria, so you are protected when you come into contact with the real bacteria.

Side effects of meningococcal vaccination
The meningococcal vaccine is safe and well studied. The most common side effects are mild and temporary: pain, redness or swelling at the injection site, mild fever, headache or fatigue. These symptoms usually disappear within a few days. Serious side effects are very rare.
