Protect yourself from Dengue: tips and advice

What is dengue?

Dengue, also known as dengue fever, is a viral infection spread via the yellow fever mosquito or the Asian tiger mosquito. It usually occurs in the early morning and late afternoon.

How do you recognise dengue?
Symptoms of dengue range from high fever, severe headache (especially behind the eyes), muscle and joint pain, nausea, vomiting and skin rash. Symptoms usually start four to seven days after infection by a mosquito bite. The first time a person gets dengue, symptoms are usually mild, but with a second or third infection, symptoms can be more severe and even life-threatening.

Vaccination
There is a vaccine for dengue, known as Dengvaxia (CYD-TDV), approved in several countries for use in persons aged 9 to 45 years who have been previously infected with dengue. However, it is limited in its availability and is recommended under specific circumstances. Make an appointment at Vaccination Point for vaccination options if you are travelling to an area where dengue is common.

Prevention and protection
Dengue prevention is crucial. Here are some tips to protect you from dengue:

  • Use insect repellent: Products containing DEET, picaridin or oil of lemon eucalyptus are effective against Aedes mosquitoes.
  • Wear protective clothing: Long sleeves and trousers help prevent mosquito bites.
  • Avoid standing water: Make sure there is no standing water around your accommodation, where mosquitoes like to lay their eggs.
  • Use impregnated mosquito net: Sleeping under a mosquito net can provide extra protection, especially at night.

When to seek medical help
If you experience symptoms of dengue after returning from your trip, it is important to seek medical attention immediately and share your travel history with your healthcare provider. By being aware of the risks and taking preventive measures, you can reduce your chances of contracting dengue while travelling to high-risk areas. Stay safe and informed, and enjoy your adventures with proper protection against health risks like dengue.
