What vaccinations are required for Ghana?
A compulsory vaccination For Ghana, the vaccination against yellow fever. This vaccine should be administered at least 10 days before arrival. Do you not have proof of yellow fever vaccination? If so, you may be refused entry to Ghana. A yellow fever vaccination is valid for life, so you only need to get it once.
Besides the mandatory yellow fever vaccination, there are a number of vaccinations strongly recommended for Ghana:
- DTP (Diphtheria, Tetanus and Polio): recommended due to possible exposure to these diseases in Ghana.
- Hepatitis A: A vaccination against hepatitis A is strongly recommended as this disease can be transmitted through food and water.
Optional additional vaccinations for Ghana
Depending on your travel plans and the nature of your stay, the following vaccinations may be optional:
- Hepatitis B: especially recommended for travellers staying in Ghana for more than three months or will have closer contact with local people.
- Meningitis (meningococcal): meningococcal meningitis is prevalent in some areas of Ghana. The vaccine is recommended during the dry season (December to June) or when visiting high-risk areas.
- Rabies (rabies): especially relevant for travellers who spend a lot of time in natural areas or come into contact with animals.
