What vaccinations are required for China?

There are no compulsory vaccinations for travelling to China, but there are several highly recommended vaccinations that protect your health.

Recommended vaccinations for China:

  • DTP (Diphtheria, Tetanus and Polio): This vaccine is recommended as you may come into contact with these diseases in China, especially when travelling outside major cities.
  • Hepatitis A: This is recommended because of the potentially less hygienic conditions, especially regarding food and drink.
  • Typhoid fever: This vaccination is wise if your trip is longer than two weeks, or you are travelling outside tourist areas.

Optional additional vaccinations for China

Depending on your personal travel circumstances, the following vaccinations may be optionally recommended:

  • Hepatitis B: If you are staying in China for long periods of time or potentially coming into contact with blood, for example through medical procedures, this vaccination is good extra protection.
  • Rabies (rabies): For travellers who come into frequent contact with animals or stay in rural areas, a rabies vaccination may be wise.
  • Japanese encephalitis: If travelling to rural areas during the rainy season, this vaccine may be considered as the disease is transmitted by mosquitoes.
