What vaccinations are compulsory, recommended and optional for Tanzania?

For travel to Tanzania, a yellow fever vaccination mandatory if you are coming from a high-risk area for yellow fever. Make sure you get this vaccination at least 10 days before arrival gets, otherwise entry to the country may be denied.

In addition, the following vaccinations are strongly recommended:

  • DTP (Diphtheria, Tetanus and Polio): this is due to sanitary conditions in some parts of Tanzania;
  • Hepatitis A: advisable due to risk of contamination through food and water.

Travellers staying in Tanzania for long periods of time or coming into frequent contact with the local population are advised to get vaccinated against hepatitis B.

Optional vaccinations for Tanzania

In addition to the recommended vaccinations, optional vaccinations may be required depending on your travel plans. Do you plan to spend a lot of time in nature or actively interact with animals in Tanzania? If so, it is advisable to get vaccinated against rabies. Taking malaria medication is also very important here, as in many areas of Tanzania malaria occurs.

Other optional vaccinations include:

  • TB (Tuberculosis): Especially for travellers staying in Tanzania for an extended period or having intensive contact with the local population.
  • Meningitis: Recommended in certain areas during the dry season.
  • Schistosomiasis: For travellers wishing to swim in freshwater lakes, as this parasitic disease can be transmitted through freshwater.

Stay well protected during your trip to Tanzania
